On The Horns of a Dilemma: LOTRO’s (Imaginary) Transfers

“On the horns of a dilemma”, for those not getting the reference.

So it was announced that the transfer button would appear this morning at 8 am Eastern. So there I was, refreshing my log ins (logging in/logging out to see if the Transfer button appeared), and my Gawd. There it was!

Following forum advice, I hit Transfer, waited a few seconds to see if my LOTRO Points showed up meaning I was in business and not just a follower of the sacred hourglass….

It was going so well. Then happenings of the dog variety behind me distracted me and sheeett, I hit the Play button. Dead Meat. Transfer button was up the usual 5 minutes or so before being taken away.

This whole process is nerve wracking, but it’s better than doom scrolling, right? I took a look at the real news and crawled right back into the cozy LOTRO forums, let me tell you.

I am invested in this now, so I did the unthinkable and opened Discord and joined the Official Lord of the Rings Discord. Ha, they want to verify your phone number before you can post, but you can read and enjoy. C-Man does indeed interact there, though not a lot, whereas when he does write on the forums, its just announcements, no engagement, that I’m seeing.

The dilemma. Wait to try to transfer altogether until things are sorted. Or, create place marker characters tomorrow when the servers open for everyone, with transfers in theory still toodling along in the background.

My fear is, since it appears many more players decided to move right away to the new servers than likely expected, and a potentially large number of players reactivated accounts just to take part in this process, that there actually may not be room on the new servers to accommodate those who want to be on those servers. So what will they do? Open overflow servers, a typical response, but likely splitting players and kinships and people’s characters who are just casually playing, but want all of their characters together?

For me, I’ll keep trying to transfer, and if I can’t, I’ll have to hope to log in tomorrow to create placeholders for my peeps.
